Dr. Carolyn Klaus will be speaking at New Covenant Fellowship in Penfield on the topic: "The Church's Role in the Global AIDS Epidemic" with a dessert reception following. Carolyn is an internist (and personal friend of John's) who started an inner city clinic in Philadelphia which became primarily an AIDS treatment facility. She has subsequently given that work over to others, moved to Indiana, and is now involved in AIDS on a more international basis. Carolyn is regarded as one of the experts on the church's response to AIDS, and has worked with AIMS in East and Central Africa and various parts of the former Soviet Union. This event is sponsored by Hope Together, a new relief and development agency being developed by New Covenant Fellowship in Penfield. Please consider coming and bringing a friend. Blessings! Hello All! I want to encourage med students (2nd & 3rd year) & residents to apply for the MAP/Reader's Digest International Fellowship (MAP RDIF). The fellowship pays airfare for 3rd & 4th year med students and residents to work in an overseas medical mission setting. The program has been enhanced since I used it to go to Swaziland as a fourth year medical student. Now it pays 100% of airfare rather than 75%. Secondly, now Christian rural health programs (e.g., community health), in addition to mission hospitals, are approved for use of the fellowship money! Deadline for apps March 1. So your upcoming Winter break might be a good time to work on those applications! If you are not sure whether you can go next year, apply anyway- you can always say no later! For more info, go to http://www.map.org/main.asp?menu=3&submenu=4 or call (800) 225-8550 ext. 6633. If you are awarded the fellowship, please drop me a line so I know. I'm happy to help with advice/ideas on where to go. In Him, Steve Baker, MD Portland Council ________________________________ Scott P. This school year is off to a good start, but some of the best things are yet to come and we thought we'd let you know about a couple of them before you head into the holidays. Please mark your calendars for the following coming events: "Caring for the Whole Person" Workshop This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend three insight-packed days, January 20-22, with one of the world's experts on biblically-based whole person medicine. Dr. Fountain presented a similar workshop last year to students enrolled in the Missions and International Community Health program at Elim Bible Institute, and it was such a rich experience that we invited him to return this year and open the doors to wider participation. Health professionals and medical students from all over Upstate NY are being invited, along with this year's medical missions class at Elim. Please read the outline online (see Links below), check what your class schedule will permit, set the time aside on your calendar, invite your pastor or others who might be interested in joining us, order Dr. Fountain's book, and send in the online Registration Form right now, before you change your mind. Winter Christian Physicians Breakfast Dr. Fountain's workshop will be overlapping with our Breakfast on Saturday, January 22, when he will be sharing with our whole group on the topic of "Anger and the Healing Power of Forgiveness." This will be a great chance to fellowship with area physicians and other students from the region. Please RSVP to Susan (susan@harpsongs.com), but if you register for the Workshop, you'll already be on the Breakfast list. NOTE: To accommodate the schedule of the Workshop, the Breakfast will be starting at 8:00 am instead of the usual time. Our prayers are with you as you wrap up your studies and prepare for a well-earned holiday break. God bless you! This week Adaobi is leading and Andrew will be teaching us French Christmas carols to help us better understand the reading. Please think about things that you like about Bible study and what things you would like to see change for next semester (perhaps there is a better night or time, or perhaps a different book?). Bring your thoughts. Jesse
